North America’s biggest professional road cycling stage race has called Santa Rosa home more often than any other city in the state. While the race doesn’t not come through our fair city every year, they do recognize what we all already know: Sonoma County is made for the bike.

Bike to Work Day, known by some as “every day,” is a time of solidarity that illustrates a world where we arrive to our jobs happier, healthier, and more environmentally sound. We look forward to when this day is lost in a new mass of commuters pedalling their way to that next mind-numbing staff meeting.

The defining Wine Country ride is the Santa Rosa Cycling Club’s aptly named Wine Country Century. It’s been around forever and is a great introduction to long-distance riding in this area. There’s good reason it sells out every year, so do plan ahead.

Tuesday Night Twilights   springsummer
Take up your road bike and hit the Tuesday evening criteriums at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. It’s a stiff field out there, but there’s always room for someone who wants to learn. Just race nicely and don’t go costing anyone their Cat 3 upgrade points.

Giro Bello   summer
Opt for three routes through the heart of Sonoma County’s Wine Country with the Santa Rosa Rotarians as they continue their decades-long crusade against child polio. It’s the bicycle equivalent of the local BBQ party, with a vibe as laid back as the lounge chairs at the finish line.

Sonoma County Bike Expo   summer
It’s nice to get excited about bikes even without, you know, actually riding them. The SoCo Bike Expo is a great gathering of local bike vendors, entertainers, and food purveyors right alongside framebuilding demonstrations, bike rodeos, and short track events.

SoNoMas MTB Marathon   summer
Bike Monkey’s dark horse race is a rugged single lap around Lake Sonoma, sapping your precious bodily fluids over 35 hot, gorgeous, grueling miles. Cash purses await these few, these happy few (hundred), who venture forth under that hot sun.

Terrible Two   june
Part of California’s tight-knit, under-the-radar circuit of grueling double centuries, the Santa Rosa Cycling Club-hosted ride takes off on the longest Saturday of the year to roll over 16,000 vertical feet in 200 miles. The quick ones do this in just over eleven hours, the slower ones are lucky to get in under sixteen—and many simply don’t finish.

The Santa Rosa Police Chaplaincy and their Blue Line Cycling Team put on a highly-praised ride, one route of which drags riders into the Geysers backcountry. Their promo flyers are not to be missed. Who says law enforcement is humorless?

Howarth Park Dirt Crits   june–august
Cram a four-hour ride into thirty minutes as you sprint your head off on repeated hot laps. Held adjacent to Annadel State Park in the summer, drop in after a hard Wednesday at the cubicle farm and untie all those knots you put in your ropes before dinner with the family. Paper plate racing at its finest.

Lake Sonoma MTB Series   june–august
One of the oldest series in Sonoma County, these races take advantage of the seldom-traveled singletrack shores of Lake Sonoma. These events put the roots in grassroots racing, keeping it downhome and low-key, even when pro riders drop in.

Vine Man Triathlon   july
Ironman Triathlons are the pinnacle events of the sport. There are only a few of them nationwide and we’re lucky enough to have had one in our backyard for over twenty years. The full Vineman is in July, but look for ancillary tri-type events all that month.

Annadel XC   august
The jewel of Northern California singletrack, Annadel is the only state park in California to host a mountain bike race. Several hundred riders compete in the original race format that made the park part of mountain biking history.

Pro cyclist Levi Leipheimer and Sonoma County’s great love letter to the spirit and joy of cycling takes place in late September/early October. Join 7,500 people from around the world as they ride the famed King Ridge Road, scale the Coleman Wall, and in all other ways experience the best day out on two wheels.

Santa Rosa CX Cup   fallwinter
While everyone else is prepping for the holidays, cyclocross racers are warming up their race season. Born in Belgium, these events feature mud, cold, rain, beer, and a heart rate that requires algebra to calculate. The Santa Rosa CX Cup series is no exception and its four-race series is a destination throughout the Bay Area.
