Go Full "Circle Cycle" with
The Imaginists

magic-circleIn the purple building at 461 Sebastopol Avenue, The Imaginists theater group is creating a new production to touch hearts and open minds.

Based on the Bertolt Brecht play, “The Caucasian Chalk Circle”; “The Magic Circle Cycle”, birthed in response to current events, raises a voice for some of life’s enduring questions.

resized_20161123_103443Brecht’s original play is based on a Chinese tale similar to the Biblical story of King Solomon, where two women fight over the maternal custody of one child. In the story, the serving class attempts to overthrow the elite in a coup. In the ensuing chaos, a royal woman leaves behind her child, who is taken in by a servant girl.

Who then has the right to custody? The real, yet neglectful mother, or a nurturing servant? What needs protecting in this day and age and who is going to do it? What, if anything, can best help to mend a divided society?

The collaborative nature of The Imaginists expresses this schism from a diverse perspective. Art, music, movement and prose draws the audience in through a revolving door of insight and creativity.

Local musician Kalei Yamanoha, with director Brent Lindsay and fellow Imaginists, are turning the play into a
complete musical. Full of poignant original songs, limericks and chilling choral harmonies.

With a theater that fits up to 50 people, their intimate performances attract eager audiences for four original pieces a year. In addition to these productions, The Imaginists bring creative theater to neighborhood parks all over Santa Rosa with their free bilingual bicycle summer tour, “The Art is Medicine Show / El Show el Arte es Medicina." The Imaginists have mastered the art of breaking language barriers and showing that creativity is a uniting element between cultures.

At Winter Blast, there always seems to be a new wonder around every corner. SOFA is home to over 35 artists, who all work alongside progressive, creative organizations and businesses. Art Studios, businesses and galleries open their doors and everyone mingles in a highly creative and welcoming environment.

Sweet smells of food and wine waft from restaurants and vendors. Puppets, fire dancers and costumed characters walk the streets. The Whiskey Drome lets the daring drop in to a cycling tornado of insanity, while music moves through the night like maple syrup over a big stack of banana pancakes.

winter-6

There will be stages at Atlas Coffee, Spinster Sisters and The Peace and Justice Center, with a wide variety of local performers, bands and DJ’s. El Radio Fantastique will be there!  So will Hubbub Club Marching Band, and live Taiko Drumming, provided by the Matsuri Japanese Arts Festival. Proceeds from beer and wine sales go to support some of our favorite local non-profits.

The event is rain or shine! For more info please visit sofasantarosa.com. And remember, if you bring a sofa, take it with you! :)
